Sugözü Bay, located in Yumurtalık (ancient Aegeae), the historical port city of Çukurova opening to the Mediterranean, is a sheltered natural bay where sailors have taken shelter in storms since ancient times. The location, which takes its name from the boiling of fresh water (sugözü) under the rocks just behind the beach, is one of the rare coasts where the sea and fresh water meet. Coastal dunes are among the most important natural nesting areas of the endangered Caretta Caretta and green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) in the Mediterranean.
