Cemre Castle
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Cemre Castle (known locally as Taşahir Castle or Cimre Castle) is a steep mountain observation castle built during the Roman and Byzantine periods and fortified during the Seljuk period to ensure the security of the Toros caravan routes and the Alara Valley. The castle walls, skillfully built into the natural morphology of the rock, were a small but impenetrable garrison point controlling the mountain passes in the Middle Ages. According to local legend, it is said that when the castle commander was under enemy siege, he went down to the Alara Stream to get water from the secret caves and tunnels under the castle and resisted for months without surrendering. It is rumored that the soldiers guarding the bastion of the castle communicate with Alara Castle and Syedra through fire towers. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features The castle is built at an altitude of approximately 1,150 meters above sea level, on top of a huge limestone monolith cliff that rises 300 meters steeply from the valley floor. Thanks to its strategic location, it offers a great view overlooking the Alara Valley, the surrounding cedar forests and the foothills of the Geyik Mountains. It is surrounded by wild junipers, thymes and Scots pines. Visiting Hours, Days and Entrance Fees
