Alara Kemer Bridge
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore The Historical Alara Aqueduct Bridge, built on the Alara Stream by the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I in the 13th century, is the lifeblood of the historical caravan route and the Silk Road connection between Konya (the capital city) and Alanya (the winter capital). Built with a single large arch and cut stone architecture, the bridge has made the most difficult passage of the flowing Alara Stream safe. Local legends say that ostrich egg whites and Taurus lime were mixed into the bridge's mortar, which is why it has remained intact against floods and earthquakes for centuries. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features It is located at an altitude of approximately 320 meters, in a rocky gorge where the Alara Stream canyon narrows. It is surrounded on both sides by steep limestone cliffs, maquis communities, oleanders and plane trees. The turquoise colored Alara Stream flows under the bridge.
