Historical Kaleiçi
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Historical Kaleiçi was built in the 2nd century BC by Pergamon King II. It is the ancient living core of the city of 'Attaleia', which was founded when Attalos ordered his soldiers to 'Find me heaven on earth'. This living open-air museum, surrounded by walls from Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman civilizations, is the pinnacle of Mediterranean urban civil architecture with its narrow interlocking stone streets, wooden Ottoman mansions with bay windows, centuries-old orange trees and bougainvilleas in its courtyards. In his Travelogue, Evliya Çelebi describes with admiration the walls surrounding Kaleiçi on all sides, that each neighborhood is protected by iron gates, and the scents of incense and coffee rising from the port. According to local legend, every traveler lost in the labyrinthine streets of Kaleiçi finds the footprints of Attalos and the Seljuk dervishes in the Mediterranean wind whispering through the stone walls. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features Kaleiçi is built on a travertine cliff plateau 30-40 meters above sea level and on a sloping slope descending to the ancient marina like an amphitheater. The floor is entirely made of historical cobblestone. Its climate has a typical Mediterranean character; The narrow streets remain in the shade, creating a natural coolness corridor in the summer heat. Orange, bitter orange, jasmine, bougainvillea and vines grow in the inner courtyards of the mansions surrounded by high stone walls. Visiting Hours, Days and Entrance Fees
