Historical Çıldır Stone Arch Bridge (Kotik)
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore The historical Çıldır Stone Arch Bridge (locally known as Kotik / Doğankaya Bridge) is a monumental single-eyed stone arch bridge built on the Karaçay Canyon within the borders of Çıldır district during the Seljuk and Ottoman periods to ensure the safe passage of caravan routes. The bridge was built entirely by combining local basalt stones with Khorasan mortar; It has enabled traders, transhumants and military units to cross the canyon, going to the Caucasus, Georgia and Tabriz for centuries. Local legends tell that the durability of this bridge, defying flood waters, was preserved by the skill of Seljuk stonemasons and the secret seal engraved on the bridge keystone. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features It is located at an altitude of approximately 1,940 meters, in the steep canyon valley formed by Karaçay's volcanic basalt plateau. The clear mountain waters flowing under the bridge connecting the two steep sides of the canyon and the surrounding untouched Caucasian plateau flora create a magnificent landscape.
