Historical Satan Castle and Karachay Canyon Panoramic Viewpoint
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore
With its roots dating back to the Urartu period, the Historical Satan Castle (the ancient Kal'a-ı Iblis of the Kars-Ardahan region) was built on a steep rock mass at the top of the steep Karaçay Canyon overlooking the Çıldır Lake basin. During the Middle Ages, it was used by the Georgian Bagratid Kingdom, Seljuks and Ottomans as one of the most impregnable castles of the Caucasus trade and defense line.
Architectural Structure and Details
It is a natural rock castle typology surrounded by cliffs of hundreds of meters on three sides. The walls, built of rubble stone and cut limestone, follow the natural contours of the steep cliffs. Inside the castle, there are hidden water cisterns, watchtowers and single-nave chapel ruins. The hidden vaulted water tunnels leading down to the Karachay River in the valley floor are a masterpiece of military architecture.
