About & Visitor Guide

History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Aynalı Çarşı, one of the symbols of Çanakkale, was built in 1889 during World War II. It was built by İlya Halyo, one of the prominent figures of the Çanakkale Jewish community, during the reign of Abdulhamid. The bazaar, which is the subject of the Gallipoli War folk songs ("They shot me in Çanakkale / They put me in the grave before I died / I was shot in Mirror Bazaar"), took its name from the shops at its entrance that produce full-length mirrors and blinders. The registered Çanakkale Cheese Halva, prepared in the historical dessert shops around the bazaar, is a centuries-old Ottoman heritage delicacy produced by mixing fresh unsalted sheep cheese, semolina, flour and sugar in copper cauldrons over wood fire. Hot yellow halva options without oven, with its fried crust like a baked pomegranate, are the crown jewel of the city's gastronomic identity. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features Çanakkale central district is located at sea level (altitude 5 meters) on the Asian coast of the Dardanelles. The cool northerly winds of the Bosphorus constantly clean the city's air. The historical bazaar is in the heart of the city, at the center of the historical urban texture intertwined with Kordon Boyu and Çimenlik Castle. Visiting Hours, Days and Entrance Fees
