Beydere Canyon & Waterfall
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Beydere Canyon and Waterfall, hidden in the side valley connected to the Peri Stream basin in the rural area of Beydere Village, in the northeast of Karakoçan district, is one of the most untouched natural wonders of Eastern Anatolia. The canyon, which was formed by the splitting of huge limestone blocks as a result of millions of years of river erosion, hosts waterfalls that erupt as the melting mountain snow waters spill from the high rock walls in the spring months. Canyon caves, one of the safe crossing points of old caravan routes, have served as shelter for local shepherds and travelers for centuries. It is said among the local people that the sound of this waterfall soothes the soul and making a wish in the cool water ponds of the canyon brings good luck. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features It lies in the steep valley cleft southwest of Beydere Village. Its altitude above sea level is 1,220 meters. Along the canyon, there are steep rock walls up to 80 meters high, wild walnut trees, mountain poplar, willow and rich ivy communities. Visiting Hours, Days and Entrance Fees
