Sarıcan Plateaus & Springs
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Sarıcan Plateaus, which spread to the foothills of the Akdağ and Kuruca Mountain ranges that rise majestically behind the Sarıcan Town of Karakoçan district, are a centuries-old plateau culture center where nomadic Turkmens and local tribes have migrated for centuries to cool off and graze their herds in the summer months. These vast mountain meadows, which are home to hundreds of ice-cold karst springs gushing out as the snow water melts, represent the pure nature of Eastern Anatolia. According to local legend, it has been passed down from word to mouth for centuries that those who drink water from Sarıcan springs have a longer life, and that cheese and butter made from the milk of sheep and goats grazing in these plateaus are a cure for troubles.
