Çağlayan Village Waterfall, Natural Water Curtain and Canyon Cliff
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Çağlayan Waterfall, located within the borders of Çağlayan Village in Şebinkarahisar district, is one of the rare geological formations in Türkiye that can be passed under and stood behind the water curtain. The waterfall, which falls loudly onto the valley floor over a steep conglomerate rock mass at an altitude of approximately 45-50 meters, is the most fascinating natural monument of the Kelkit basin, where the Central Anatolia and Black Sea climates intersect. According to the centuries-old legend told among the local people, in ancient times, a saint passing through the region during a drought period hit the ground with his staff at the bottom of the rock and prayed; Suddenly, ice-cold clear water gushed out from the top of the rock, flooding the valley. Thanks to the natural cavernous recess behind the rock, visitors can get behind the water without getting wet and watch the waterfall through the water curtain. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features The waterfall is located at an altitude of approximately 1,320 meters above sea level. The water of the waterfall reaches its highest flow especially in the spring months (March-June) when the winter snow melts and creates a magnificent water curtain. Although the water flow decreases from mid-summer, the canyon cliff and waterfall basin maintain their cool microclimate. It is surrounded by wild juniper, rose hip, mountain poplar and rich plateau steppe flora. Visiting Hours, Days and Entrance Fees
