About & Visitor Guide

History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Koçyiğit Waterfall is a hidden natural masterpiece that pours into the valley from a deep canyon cleft at the foot of the magnificent Balkaya Mountains at an altitude of 2,800 meters, within the borders of Koçyiğit Village of Derecik district, located at the southernmost tip of Türkiye. The waterfall, which falls from monolithic limestone cliffs at an altitude of approximately 45-50 meters, is one of the highest and untouched waterfalls in Eastern Anatolia. According to the narrative among the local people, the place where a brave border hero who made this steep canyon his home in ancient times defended the mountain pass alone against enemy raids and was martyred was called 'Koçyiğit'; The roaring waters of the waterfall have been accepted as a monument that has kept the name of this brave man alive for centuries. Thanks to Derecik's temperate microclimate zone, this waterfall, which contrasts with the surrounding pomegranate, fig and walnut gardens, is the rising ecotourism star of the region. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features The waterfall is located at the base of the steep Balkaya limestone tower, at an altitude of approximately 950-1,050 meters above sea level. Thanks to its Mediterranean-like temperate microclimate, wild pomegranate, mountain fig, sumac and rich oak groves grow around it. The cauldron into which the waterfall flows is filled with clear spring water. Visiting Hours, Days and Entrance Fees
