Doski Valley, Gagevran Ancient Rock Churches and Nature Route
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Doski Valley and Gagevran Rock Churches carry the most mysterious traces of the 11th century medieval Christianity and Nestorian monastic culture, carved into the steep canyon rocks at the foot of the steep Cilo mountain range, in the southeast of Yüksekova district. In the multi-room cave monastery complex carved into the steep rocks near Gagevran (Akçalı) Village, there are fresco ruins, cross motifs and chapel niches painted on the walls with red and madder ocher. According to the centuries-old legend told among the local people, in ancient times, monks and people escaping from wars and invasions took shelter in this steep valley and built temples and shelters connected to each other by secret passages inside the rocks. The clear mountain stream flowing through the valley, deep gorges and endemic reverse tulip (Weeping Bride) corridors make the region a unique discovery route for both history and nature hiking enthusiasts. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features The valley lies at an average altitude of 1,850 - 2,100 meters. It is surrounded by steep limestone cliffs, deep canyon crevices and mountain streams. In spring, the protected endemic Inverted Tulip (Fritillaria imperialis) flowers bloom on the mountain slopes. There are rich birch, poplar and walnut communities on the valley floor. Visiting Hours, Days and Entrance Fees
