History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore

  • •It was built by Mimar Sinan in 1553 by Suleiman the Magnificent to meet the safe distance needs of the army and pilgrim caravans during the Egypt and Baghdad campaigns.
  • •It is the main worship center of the complex that controls the Belen Strait, the most strategic passage of the Silk Road and pilgrimage route. Although it is a sultan mosque, it was built with an elegant and simple single minaret for military parade security.
  • •According to the legend told among the local people, it was believed that the prayers recited in this mosque, where caravans and veterans took shelter in the harsh winter of the Amanos Mountains, formed a spiritual armor against mountain bandits.   • •Spiritual Visit and Prayer Etiquette: One should be in awe during prayer times, and care should be taken not to disturb those praying while examining the historical altar and pulpit.
  • •Photography and Framing:The Ottoman classical period cut stone workmanship inside the mosque and the Mimar Sinan style dome pulleys give extremely impressive frames in the light of the afternoon sun.
