Historical Üçağızlı Cave Paleolithic Settlement and Coastal Cliffs
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Historical Üçağızlı Cave is one of the most important Upper Paleolithic settlements, located on the coast of Meydan Village in Samandağ district, on the slopes of steep limestone cliffs overlooking the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean, and breaking new ground in the world archeology and human history literature. Dating back to approximately 40,000 to 45,000 years ago (Early Upper Paleolithic / Ahmar culture), the cave is the key stop in the Near East on the migration route of modern humans (Homo sapiens) from Africa to Eurasia. During the excavations carried out by Ankara University and international archaeological delegations, the oldest personal ornaments known to human history (pierced shell necklaces and beads), bone tools, flint blades and remains of hunted wild animals were unearthed. The cave was named 'Üçağızlı' due to its three natural galleries and rock windows opening to the sea. According to local legend, thousands of years ago, sailors and hunters escaping from sea storms took shelter in this three-mouthed cave, watched the sea waves from the windows of the cave and prayed; Thanks to the good luck of the cave, no living creature staying in this shelter would be lost in the storm. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features The cave is located on the rocky slope of steep coastal cliffs, at an altitude of approximately 18 meters above sea level. Below it lie cliffs and natural rock pools beaten by the rough waves of the Mediterranean. Typical Mediterranean maquis flora, wild olives, myrtle, sage and rock figs grow around it.
