About & Visitor Guide

History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Historical Terkos (Durusu) Lake and Water Pier, located in the northwest of Istanbul within the borders of Arnavutköy district, is the city's largest freshwater basin since ancient times. The historical Terkos Water Company Pump Station, established in 1883 with the cooperation of French engineers and the Ottoman Empire, revolutionized our technological history as the first modern industrial water facility to transport pressurized water to the city through modern pipes. Architectural / Natural Structure Natural freshwater lake of lagoon origin; It hosts hundreds of bird and freshwater fish species with its reeds, water lily beds and surrounding rich forest texture. The historic 19th century stone pump buildings with steam engines, brick chimneys and historical wooden piers by the lake create an idyllic picture where industrial heritage blends with nature. Spiritual Visiting Etiquette and Commemoration Guidelines It is the ancient source of the water that is known as "Terkos water" and has been flowing from the fountains in the homes of Istanbulites for a century and a half. It has an invaluable place both as a nature conservation area and as an industrial heritage. Practical Visiting Tips & Transportation
