About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore The historical Germe Aqueduct is a monumental hydraulic art structure located on the northwestern branch of the Kırkçeşme Water Transmission System, built by Koca Mimar Sinan in the name of Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century. It is a strategic transition point on the main line that transfers the waters collected from the Terkos and Istranca valleys to the Historical Peninsula. Architectural / Natural Structure The arch has a series of two-storey monumental arches built with huge blocks of cut limestone. Hydraulic steps that regulate water pressure and flood flow, stone-carved water channels and curved spurs demonstrate Sinan's architectural intelligence. Its surroundings are covered with oak and hornbeam forests.
