History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Founded by Mehmed the Conqueror immediately after the conquest of Istanbul to supply cannons to the Ottoman army and navy, Tophane-i Âmire has been the military industrial heart of the empire for centuries. Sultan III. The monumental foundry, which was renovated during the Selim period, today serves as the prestigious culture and art center of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. Architectural / Natural Structure It is one of the most monumental examples of Ottoman industrial architecture in the world, with its imposing stone building covered with three monumental domes, high brick vaults and cut stone walls. Its acoustic structure is unique for exhibitions and performances. Practical Visiting Tips & Transportation It is located at the intersection of Boğazkesen Street, just above the Tophane tram stop. Exhibitions are generally free and can be visited six days a week.
