Historical Tantalus Tomb and Tholos Monument
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Located on the southern slopes of Yamanlar Mountain overlooking Bayraklı, the Historical Tomb of Tantalus is a monumental tholos (round-domed tomb) structure dating back to the 7th century BC, attributed to the Phrygian King Tantalus, the only mortal who could sit at the table of the gods in Ancient Greek mythology. This huge stone tumulus, discovered by the famous French archaeologist Charles Texier in 1835, is the eternal resting place of the king, who, according to Homer epics and mythology, revealed the secrets of the gods to people and was sentenced to eternal hunger and thirst ('Tantalos Torture') due to his arrogance. The hill, which completely overlooks the Gulf of Izmir, reflects the ancient mythological roots of ancient Smyrna. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features It is located on the foothills of Yamanlar Mountain, at an altitude of approximately 110 meters above sea level, on a rocky ground, on a panoramic hill plateau overlooking the Gulf of Izmir.
