About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore The historical Izzet Mehmed Pasha Mosque was built in 1796 by the Ottoman Grand Vizier Izzet Mehmed Pasha, originally from Safranbolu, by building arches on the Akçasu Stream and canyon, and is one of the peak works of Baroque and Classical Ottoman architecture. The mosque was designed as a small model of the Nuruosmaniye Mosque in Istanbul; With its body built entirely of cut stone, richly decorated pulpit and mihrab, it was built by Sultan III. It carries the signature of Selim. In local legends, Grand Vizier Izzet Mehmed Pasha's erection of bridge arches in the canyon and the elevation of the mosque above the water is described as a unique monument of Ottoman engineering and love for the country. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features It rises at an altitude of approximately 465 meters, on arches placed on the Akçasu Canyon. It exhibits a unique geological and architectural harmony with the stream waters flowing under the mosque and its location connecting the two sides of the canyon.
