Ani Historical Church of Tigran Honents (Illustrated)
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore The historical Tigran Honents Church (Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator / Illustrated Church) is the art monument of the UNESCO World Heritage Ani Ruins that has survived to the present day in the strongest, most complete and most magnificent way. It was built in 1215 by Tigran Honents, a wealthy merchant, on a terrace overlooking the steep cliffs of Arpaçay Canyon. The biggest trademark of the church is the scenes from the Bible, Hz. They are extraordinarily rich wall frescoes (wall paintings) depicting the miracles of Jesus, his birth, his crucifixion, and the life of St. Gregory, who brought Christianity to Armenians. These frescoes are the reason why it is known as the 'Illustrated Church' or 'Embroidered Church' among the public. The harmony of red, brown and black tuff stones on the exterior, the arched columns and the lion, eagle and dragon reliefs carved on the facade moldings are the pinnacle of medieval stonemasonry. According to legend, merchant Tigran Honents had this church built so that his caravans on the Silk Road could return safely to Ani and turn his wealth into an eternal work of art; It has been admired for centuries that the sounds of water rising from the depths of the canyon transform into a divine acoustic inside the church. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features It is located at an altitude of approximately 1,430 meters on a natural stone terrace overlooking the steep slopes of the deep Arpaçay Canyon, which draws the border between Türkiye and Armenia, at the eastern end of the Ani plateau. The stream at the bottom of the canyon and the cave settlements on the opposite shore offer a breathtaking view of the valley. Visiting Hours, Days and Entrance Fees
