Ilgaz Mountain Derbent Martyrs' Cemetery and Martyrs' Monument
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Ilgaz Mountain Derbent Martyrdom is the eternal memory of our heroic Mehmetçiks and self-sacrificing Turkish women who froze to martyrdom in freezing winter conditions, blizzards and storms in the Ilgaz Mountain Derbent Pass, the most difficult bend of the 'Independence Road', during the War of Independence, the epic of independence of the Turkish nation, while carrying ammunition and ammunition from the İnebolu coast to the front on oxcarts. The mausoleum rising in this sacred passage, where Martyr Şerife Bacı and many other nameless children of the motherland took the cover of their baby in their arms, covered it with bullets and froze, is a monumental symbol of the unique self-sacrifice in the defense of the homeland. In local narratives, it is stated with respect and tears that travelers passing through the Ilgaz Mountains on snowy winter nights hear the squeak of ox-cart wheels and the lullabies of the mothers of martyrs, and that these mountains are the eternal sentry of the martyrs who laid the foundations of the independent Republic of Turkey with their lives.
