Historical Kastamonu Coppersmiths' Bazaar and Crafts Complex (15th Century Candaroğulları Heritage)
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Located in the historical city center of Kastamonu, between the Nasrullah Mosque Complex and the Kurşunlu Inn, the Historical Coppersmiths' Bazaar was founded in the 15th century during the Candaroğulları Principality and became the most important mining art center of Anatolia, where the rich copper mines in the Küre Mountains were processed throughout the Ottoman Empire. This historical arasta, where the sounds of hammers have echoed for centuries, is one of the rare craft basins where the Ahi order and guild tradition has survived uninterrupted to the present day. Architectural / Natural Structure and Details Arasta preserves the traditional Ottoman bazaar texture; It attracts attention with its narrow stone streets, two-storey wooden shops, iron shutters and small artisan workshops. Copper sheets annealed over hot coal fire in the furnaces in the bazaar are hammered by master hands and turned into cauldrons, pans, jugs, samovars, trays and traditional coffee pots. Tinsmith shops and bellows furnaces complete the authenticity of the place. Spiritual Visiting Etiquette and Commemoration Guidelines Visitors who step into the Coppersmiths' Bazaar take a fascinating journey back in time with the rhythmic hammer sounds and metal smell that have not changed for centuries. Drinking tea and listening to hand-forging techniques with doyen copper masters over 70 years of age offers a living testimony of the intangible cultural heritage that is about to disappear. Practical Visiting Tips & Transportation / Check-in It is just south of Nasrullah Square and Kadi Nasrullah Mosque, reachable on foot in 2 minutes. It is open between 08:30 and 18:00 six days a week, except Sundays. Handcrafted copper products, souvenirs and kitchenware can be purchased directly from the masters.
