History & True Legends / Legends Karabaş Church is a rock monastery complex located in the Soğanlı Open Air Museum valley and containing the most perfect examples of 11th century Byzantine fresco art. The church takes its name from the black headgear (karabaş) of the saints in the frescoes; It was carved into a huge tuff rock mass with monastery cells, refectory, kitchen and burial chambers. In the frescoes, Biblical scenes, the Death of Mary and Deesis scenes are preserved with vivid madder paints.
Geographic Structure & Altitude & Nature The altitude is approximately 1,280 meters. It is located on the steep slopes of Soğanlı Canyon, in a valley surrounded by wild hazelnut, walnut and poplar trees.
