Kıyıköy Selvez Bay and Natural Beach
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Kıyıköy Selvez Bay is a hidden coastal paradise that has completely preserved its naturalness, located just north of Kıyıköy, which was known as 'Salmydessos' in ancient times and was the ancient port city of the Thracian kings on the Black Sea coast. This sheltered bay, protected from the rough waves of the Black Sea and strong northerly winds by the high cliffs that surround it like a crescent on both sides, is the most special nature shelter of the Thracian coast with its fine golden sandy beach and crystal clear calm waters. Selvez Bay, which was a natural harbor where fishing boats took shelter during storms during the Roman and Byzantine periods, carries all the elegance of the wild with its cave cavities under the steep cliffs and the oak groves around it. According to the legends of the local fishermen, it has been told for centuries that the Argonauts, the legendary sailors of the Black Sea, approached this bay in ancient times while searching for the golden fleece, and that they strengthened their sea voyages by drinking water from the fresh water springs on the cliffs. It has a magnificent geomorphological coastal structure with high limestone and sandstone cliffs, a fine sandy natural beach strip and lush maquis and oak slopes leading down to the bay.
