Sadreddin Konevi Mosque and Tomb
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Sadreddin Konevi Mosque and Tomb was built for the great Islamic mystic and philosopher Sheikh Sadreddin Konevi (1205-1274) after his death. Konevi, the stepson and most distinguished student of Şeyhü'l-Ekber Muhyiddin İbnü'l-Arabi, as well as an old friend of Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi, requested that Mevlana perform the funeral prayer upon his will, and that a tomb with a lattice open to the sky be built over his grave, not a closed dome. His open tomb with wooden lattices, sitting on marble columns, is a rare and fascinating symbol of humility embracing the sky in Turkish tomb architecture. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features The building is located within the borders of Meram, a well-established district of Konya, at an altitude of approximately 1,025 meters above sea level. The mosque courtyard, surrounded by centuries-old mulberry, acacia and linden trees, is an oasis of peace and tranquility, away from the intense noise of the city.
