Historical Melik Sunullah Mosque and Minaret (1394 Mamluk & Seljuk Heritage - Vaiz Baba)
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore
Historical Melik Sunullah Mosque (popularly known as Vaiz Baba or Vaiz Ocağı Mosque), located in the old Malatya (Battalgazi) walled settlement, was built in 1394 (Hijri 796) during the reign of the Mamluk Sultan Berkuk. Located at the intersection of Anatolian Seljuk tradition and Mamluk stone and brick craftsmanship, the temple has served as one of the most respected preaching and religious science platforms in the region for centuries.
Architectural / Natural Structure and Details
The most magnificent element of the mosque that has survived to the present day is the independently standing octagonal base and cylindrical brick minaret. The turquoise-colored glazed bricks and decorations with zigzag geometric motifs on the body of the minaret are rare examples of 14th century early Islamic brick architecture in Anatolia. The marble construction inscription on its base is an elegant example of Thuluth calligraphy of the Mamluk period.
Spiritual Visiting Etiquette and Commemoration Guidelines
The tomb of Vaiz Baba, buried in the shadow of the minaret, is a deeply spiritual place of pilgrimage for the people of Malatya. The building, which carries the scientific heritage of the Seljuk and Mamluk ages to the present day, makes its visitors feel the identity of Battalgazi as a thousand-year-old ancient Islamic city.
