Historical Mardin Porticoed Bazaar and Sipahiler Market (17th Century Ottoman Grand Bazaar Heritage)
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore The Historical Revaklı Bazaar (popularly known as Sipahiler Bazaar or Tellallar Bazaar), which forms the commercial backbone of Mardin, was built in the 17th century as a requirement of the Ottoman trade order. The bazaar, where the fabric, silk, spices and precious metals brought to the city by the Silk Road and Aleppo caravans were exchanged, is a masterpiece of an open/covered bazaar expertly adapted to the unique topography of Mardin. Architectural / Natural Structure and Details The bazaar consists of stone porticoes with deep pointed arches extending on both sides of the road and vaulted shops placed behind these porticoes. The thick stone legs of the porticoes provide cool shade to tradesmen and customers in the scorching Mesopotamian heat in summer and corridors sheltered from rain in winter. It is the most characteristic example of a bazaar where Southeastern Anatolian stone architecture integrates with the street texture. Spiritual Visiting Etiquette and Commemoration Guidelines Walking among the stone-arched shops under the porticoes takes visitors back to the lively trading days of Ottoman caravans 4 centuries ago. Today, filigree silver masters, handmade bıttım soaps, madder-dyed rugs and spice scents keep the authentic spirit of the bazaar alive. Practical Visiting Tips & Transportation / Check-in It is located in the center of Artuklu district, on the historical bazaars axis between the First Street and the Ulu Mosque. It can be visited entirely on foot from the city centre. Open every day of the week during tradesmen hours; entrance is free.
