About & Visitor Guide

History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Dağpazarı Church is the most magnificent surviving monument of the ancient city of Corapissus, located in the heart of the Taurus Mountains, and is an outstanding example of Early Christian and Byzantine architecture. According to its inscriptions and architectural style, the building, which was built in 476 AD during the reign of Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Emperor Zeno, has a three-naved basilical plan scheme. The monumental marble columns separating the central nave from the side naves, arches with Corinthian capitals and mosaic flooring in the apse reflect the high artistic taste of the period. The city of Corapissus, located on the historical caravan and pilgrimage route between Rough Cilicia and Lykaonia (Central Anatolia) in ancient times, was a contemporary religious center with the Alahan Monastery. According to local legend, when the roads were closed due to blizzard and snow in the mountainous valleys in winter, the lamps lit on the high tower of the church guided travelers and caravans, and it was believed that those who drank from the sacred spring under the church were healed from diseases. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features It is located at an altitude of approximately 1,380 meters on the Dağpazarı plateau between Göksu Valley and the Taurus Mountains, northeast of Mut district center. It is surrounded by juniper forests, walnut trees and mountain springs, and has a refreshing plateau atmosphere between the harsh continental and Mediterranean microclimate.
