Tekirambari Water Cistern (Monumental Byzantine Underground Reservoir)

The Tekirambari Water Cistern, located in central Silifke, is one of the most monumental rock-hewn underground water storage complexes in Anatolia, dating to the Early Byzantine period (5th–6th centuries AD). Built to secure the freshwater reserves of ancient Seleucia ad Calycadnum, it served as an essential civil defense bulwark during sieges and seasonal droughts.

Carved directly into solid limestone bedrock, the cistern measures 46 meters in length, 23 meters in width, and reaches a depth of 14 meters, capable of holding roughly 12,000 cubic meters of water. Its interior walls are coated with hydraulic Roman mortar (horasan), and an exquisite rock-cut spiral staircase winds gracefully down its eastern wall alongside monumental arched niches.
