History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore The historical Mersin Community Center Building (now Mersin Cultural Center and State Opera and Ballet Building) is a monumental architectural masterpiece of the Early Republic period, designed by the famous Turkish architect Ertuğrul Menteşe between 1944 and 1946 and opened as Türkiye's largest and one of Europe's few multi-purpose cultural complexes at the time it was built. It has been serving as Turkey's sixth State Opera and Ballet General Directorate stage since 1992. Architectural / Natural Structure The building is one of the most competent representatives of the Turkish Modernism and Functionalism movements of the Early Republic period. The building is located in a large landscape park on the Mediterranean coast; It offers an imposing balance with its monumental columned entrance portico, huge curved foyer windows, theater and opera hall, library, museum galleries and tower mass.
