Güzeldere Canyon and Recreation Area
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Located at the historical pass on the Bitlis road, south of the center of Muş, Güzeldere Canyon is a strategic valley through which Silk Road caravans and armies have passed through for centuries. The ruins of Güzeldere Inn, lying along the canyon, served as a shelter for travelers from snowstorms during the winter months during the Ottoman and Seljuk periods. In folk legends, it is believed that the rushing water flowing from the valley brings healing and abundance from the mountains. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features The canyon, which extends at an altitude of approximately 1,480 meters among the steep mountain masses that are extensions of the Southeastern Taurus Mountains, consists of karst limestone cliffs and a clear stream bed flowing from the bottom. There are lush poplar, willow and wild hazelnut trees on the valley floor, and it is the point with the coolest plateau air in the city during the summer months.
