Historical Haspet Castle
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Haspet Castle is a strategic mountain observation castle dating back to the Middle Ages, located on the steep rocky ridge of the Red Visit Mountain surrounding the south of the Muş Plain. The remains of two large watchtowers and a water cistern in the castle have survived to the present day. It was used to control the historical caravan and military passage routes between Muş and Bitlis-Diyarbakır during the Sasanian, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman periods. Local legends say that a secret passage hidden behind the steep rocks of Haspet Castle connects to the springs in the plain, and that the soldiers were saved from dehydration by this secret route when the castle was besieged. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features The castle was built on a steep rock mass at an altitude of approximately 1,680 meters above sea level, within the borders of Soğucak Village, at the foot of Red Visit Mountain. Surrounded by massive limestone cliffs, mountain thyme and astragalus vegetation, the castle summit has an extraordinary panorama overlooking the entire Muş Plain, the Murat River bed and the silhouette of Süphan Mountain in the distance.
