Çavuşin Eski Kaya Village and John the Baptist Church
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Carved into a huge rock mass rising between Göreme and Avanos, Çavuşin Old Village is a monumental rock settlement where uninterrupted life continued from the 5th century until the 1960s. Located at the top of the rock mass, the Church of St. John the Baptist is one of the oldest and largest rock churches in the region and has a huge single-nave basilica plan. The locals moved to the new village on the plain in the 1960s due to the risk of rockfalls, leaving behind a fascinating ghost rock town silhouette that rises storey by storey. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features It is built on a single piece of giant tuff hill at an altitude of approximately 1,080 meters. It consists of hundreds of carved rooms, chapels, dovecotes and stepped tunnel labyrinths. Visiting Hours, Days and Entrance Fees
