Swords Valley and Rock Churches
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Swords Valley, which lies right next to the Göreme Open Air Museum, took its name from the sharp fairy chimney formations that rise as sharp and steep as a sword. One of the most mysterious valleys of Cappadocia, the valley contains magnificent frescoed rock temples from the post-Iconoclasm period, such as the Church of Swords and the Church of the Virgin Mary. This steep valley, where monks retreated during the Middle Ages, provided a safe shelter for early Christian communities thanks to its natural hiding corridors. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features Located at an altitude of approximately 1,180 meters, the valley is 2.7 km long. Tunnels, water channels and steep cliffs rising like sawtooths form the characteristic geomorphology of the valley. Visiting Hours, Days and Entrance Fees
