Hallaç Monastery (Hospital Monastery - Ortahisar)
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Hallaç Monastery, carved into a steep tuff mass in the northeast of Ortahisar town, served as both a monastery and the healing center of the region (Hospital Monastery) in the 11th century. Unlike its counterparts in Cappadocia, it sheds light on the history of medicine with its multi-storey architecture developing in three directions around a huge courtyard and niche rooms thought to be used as operating rooms and pharmacies. It is rumored among the people that the herbal ointments and healing incense made in this monastery are a cure for patients coming from the surrounding provinces. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features It is located on the slope of a small valley at an altitude of approximately 1,240 meters. It dominates the view of Ortahisar Castle.
