About & Visitor Guide

History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore The Alinca Air Martyrs' Monument was built at the top of the hill where the accident took place in order to perpetuate the cherished memory of our heroic aviation officers and petty officers who reached the level of martyrdom in 1958 when a military transport plane belonging to the Turkish Air Force crashed into Gündoğmuş Hill in the Altınordu district, Altınca District, during a mission flight. This monument, erected for our heroic aviators who were martyred while protecting the skies of their homeland in harsh winter and storm conditions, is one of the most touching and respected monuments in the Black Sea region of Turkish aviation history. According to popular narrative, at the time of the accident, the villagers climbed the mountain, regardless of the storm, and rushed to the aid of the Mehmetçiks, and a deep belief in loyalty is maintained that the spirits of the martyrs have continued to fly in the skies on Gündoğmuş Hill since that day. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features The monument is located at the summit of Gündoğmuş Hill, at an altitude of approximately 520 meters above sea level, within the borders of Altınca Village, southeast of Altınordu district center. Surrounded by lush hazelnut groves, alder trees, chestnut forests and wild orchid flora, the hill has an airy location with a bird's eye view of the entire Melet Valley and the Black Sea coast.
