Historical Ağa Mosque and Fountain (1799 Ottoman Work)
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore
Historical Ağa Mosque, one of the most established places of worship in Adapazarı, was built in 1214 Hijri (1799 Gregorian) during the Ottoman period. The mosque, which has been the spiritual shelter of Adapazarı bazaar tradesmen and ahis for centuries, is a valuable Ottoman heritage that has managed to survive in Sakarya's history tested by earthquakes.
Architectural Structure and Details
The structure, which has a rectangular plan almost square, was built with rubble stone and cut stone. The elegant minaret with a single balcony of the mosque, which is covered with a wooden hipped roof, rises from cut stone. The wooden women's gallery in the interior, the hand-carved wooden preaching platform and the simple muqarnas mihrab bear the sincere elegance of the late Ottoman provincial mosque architecture. The historical Ottoman fountain at the entrance attracts attention with its marble inscription.
