Historical Pashas Castle
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore Historical Pasalar Castle is a strategic mountain outpost castle dating back to the Byzantine period, located on a steep rocky hill overlooking the Sakarya Valley, on the ridge of Pasalar Village in Pamukova district. The castle, which was built to control the Silk Road and Sakarya River crossing route, was conquered by Osman Gazi, the founder of the Ottoman Empire, and his comrades-in-arms and was used as a key logistics base in the conquest of the region. The city walls built with rubble stone and mortar, ruins of watchtowers and cistern structures have survived to the present day. In folk narratives, the legend that the secret tunnels under the castle reach the springs of the Sakarya River at the valley floor and that the soldiers received reinforcements through these secret roads during times of siege has been told for generations. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features The castle rises on a steep and rocky hill on the northern slopes of the Pamukova Plain, at an altitude of approximately 420 meters above sea level. Its surroundings are covered with olive groves, red pine forests and vineyards, and it has a wide viewing angle overlooking the entire Pamukova Plain and the bends of the Sakarya River.
