History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore The Monument of Honor, the symbol of Samsun's and Türkiye's independence, was cast in Vienna by the world-famous Austrian sculptor Heinrich Krippel and opened with great public enthusiasm in Samsun Ataturk Park on January 15, 1932. The monument, which depicts Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on his prancing horse, looking towards the Black Sea with the air of a proud and determined commander, symbolizes the steel will of the Turkish nation that does not bow to captivity. The bronze reliefs on its base depict the devoted mothers of the Turkish people carrying cannonballs, the Turkish soldiers with spears, and the moment Ataturk set foot in Samsun.
