History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore

  • •Garrison Martyrdom, rising within the Samsun Asri Cemetery, is the eternal resting place of the heroic sons of Samsun, the first step city of the War of Independence, who fell to the ground in defense of the homeland.
  • •In the Martyrs' Cemetery area, there are the graves of hundreds of officers, non-commissioned officers, non-commissioned officers and police officers who were martyred in the War of Independence, Korean War, Cyprus Peace Operation and anti-terrorism operations, as well as the central Martyrs' Monument.
  • •In the memory of the local people, it is a sacred place of loyalty where the people of Samsun, carrying the torch of the spirit of May 19, 1919, flock to the martyrs' cemetery on every national holiday and martyr commemoration day and renew the memory of the veterans with prayers.   • •The altitude is approximately 75 meters above sea level. It is located on the hill of Asri Mezarlık overlooking the Black Sea, under the shade of cypress, pine and laurel trees.

  • •Entrance Fee:Visiting the Martyrs' Cemetery is completely free and open to the public.
  • •Visiting Hours and Days:It is open to visitors 7 days a week between 08:00 - 18:30.
  • •Rules, Security and Baby Stroller/Disabled Access: Martyrdom roads are paved with cobblestones and are fully wheelchair and stroller accessible.

  • •Spiritual Visit and Prayer Etiquette: One should not talk loudly between graves, mobile phones should be silenced, and the souls of the martyrs should be visited in spiritual peace with Fatiha and prayers.
  • •Documentary & Respectful Shooting:Flashy and entertaining selfies in the martyrs' cemetery should be avoided, only the monument and the tags of the heroes who died for the sake of the country should be documented with dignity.
  • •Important Commemoration Days:Official state and public commemoration ceremonies are held on 18 March Çanakkale Victory and Martyrs' Memorial Day, 19 May Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day and 30 August Victory Day.
  • •Local Spiritual Tradition:On Fridays and holy nights, rose water is sprinkled and halva and lokma are served by the relatives of the martyrs and visitors for charity.
