Historical Samsun Grand Mosque (Cami-i Kebir)
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore The Historical Grand Mosque, Samsun's most established and magnificent place of worship, was first built out of wood in the 14th century by Hıdır Bey, one of the Anatolian Seljuk commanders. The mosque, which was destroyed in the great Samsun fire in 1869, was built by Sultan II. It was rebuilt as a magnificent Ottoman neoclassical monument of yellow cut stone in 1884, with the contributions of Abdulhamid's mother, Perestu Kadin Efendi, and under the supervision of Batumi immigrant architects. The mosque, which is considered the spiritual heart of Samsun with its two elegant minarets, high dome, hand-carved decorations and stone-arched porticoes, has been the city's largest gathering center for Friday and Eid prayers for centuries. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features It is located in the city center of İlkadım, close to Saathane Square and the sea beach, at an altitude of approximately 18 meters. It is one of the most peaceful corners of the city with its large marble courtyard and historical fountain. Visiting Hours, Days and Entrance Fees
