History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore

  • •It is the eternal resting place of the heroic Turkish Armed Forces, Gendarmerie and Police members who sacrificed their lives for the indivisible integrity of the homeland and the peace and security of the nation in the steep mountains and valleys of Tunceli.
  • •In the martyrs' cemetery area, there are the graves of hundreds of heroes who martyred in internal security operations and the marble Martyrs' Monument rising overlooking the Tunceli Mountains.
  • •In the legends, it is stated with respect that the memory of the brave men who died to defend the homeland on the snowy peaks of the Munzur and Pülümür mountains lives like a banner waving forever in the chest of the nation. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features
  • •The altitude is approximately 960 meters above sea level. It is located on the northern slopes of Tunceli city center, on the backs of Atatürk District.
  • •It is located on a dominant hill plateau overlooking the majestic silhouette of the Munzur Mountains and the Munzur Stream valley.
  • •The area surrounded by oak and pine trees has a very dignified atmosphere with arranged marble sarcophagi, waving red flags and monumental inscriptions. Visiting Hours, Days and Entrance Fees
  • •Entrance Fee:Visiting the Martyrs' Cemetery is completely free and open to the public.
  • •Visiting Hours and Days:It is open to visitors 7 days a week between 08:00 - 18:30.
  • •Rules, Security and Baby Stroller/Disabled Access: Martyrs' Memorial roads are paved with cobblestones and are fully accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

  • •Spiritual Visit and Prayer Etiquette: While walking among the graves of the heroes who died for the sake of the country, decency should be maintained, and Fatihas and prayers should be donated to the souls of the holy martyrs.
  • •Documentary & Respectful Shooting:Martyr's monument and martyr's tags should be documented within the limits of respect; Casual and ostentatious selfies should be strictly avoided.
  • •Important Commemoration Days:Official wreath presenting ceremonies are held on March 18, Martyrs' Memorial Day and August 30, Victory Day, with the participation of civil and military officials.
  • •Local Spiritual Tradition:Visitors pour water on the graves of martyrs and pray, and halva and lokma are distributed for charity.
