History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore

  • •It is the turning point of world military history, where the Commander-in-Chief of the Greek Armies, General Nikolaos Trikopis, and his staff were captured by the heroic cavalry units of the Turkish Army during the Great Offensive of the War of Independence on September 2, 1922.
  • •The monumental Göğem Victory Monument, symbolizing the rise of the Turkish cavalry and the breaking of the chains of captivity of the Turkish nation, rises on the hill where the victory was won.
  • •In the legends, it is stated that Tricopis was taken to the presence of Mustafa Kemal Pasha after being captured and the great Turkish nobility and gentlemanliness shown by Gazi by saying 'War is a game of chance, general, you have done your duty' has been engraved in history in these lands.
