History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore

  • •It is the historical mass martyrdom site where 2,500 innocent civilians, including women, children and the elderly, who took shelter in the village of Zeve, were brutally murdered during the occupation of the city of Van by the Russian armies and Armenian gangs during the First World War in 1915.
  • •Mass graves and the monumental Zeve Martyrs' Monument, built in order not to forget this great pain and to keep the memory of the martyrs alive forever, rise in the martyrs' cemetery area.
  • •In the legends, it is expressed with sadness and respect that the cries of innocent babies and mothers who did not leave the village and hugged each other and gave their lives while the men in the village were fighting on the front lines have echoed in the skies of Lake Van for centuries.   • •The altitude is approximately 1,680 meters above sea level. It is located in the Zeve plain, north of the Van Yüzüncü Yıl University campus, close to the shores of Lake Van.

  • •Spiritual Visit and Prayer Etiquette: One should walk among the graves of the innocent martyrs with deep decency and silence, and read Fatiha and Yasin to the souls of our Zeve martyrs.
  • •Documentary & Respectful Shooting:Monuments and inscriptions should be documented within the limits of respect; Casual and ostentatious selfies should be strictly avoided.
  • •Important Commemoration Days:Every year, on April 2, Van's Liberation Day, official commemoration ceremonies are held with the intense participation of state officials and the public.
  • •Local Spiritual Tradition:Visitors drink water from the memorial fountain, donate it to the souls of the martyrs and distribute lokma.
