Historical Akdağmadeni Old Church
About & Visitor Guide
History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore The historical Akdağmadeni Church was built in 1862, during the reign of the Ottoman Sultan Sultan Abdülmecid, by non-Muslim subjects and mine masters working in the rich lead and silver mines of Akdağmadeni. With its monumental stone architecture with three naves, a basilical plan and a dome, it is one of the most outstanding examples of late 19th century Ottoman stonemasonry in Central Anatolia. The carved stone reliefs on its facades, arched windows and ornate column capitals reflect the aesthetic taste of the miners' guilds of the period. It was preserved and restored during the Republican period, and today serves as an art and exhibition center that hosts the cultural events of the city. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features It is located in Akdağmadeni district center, at an altitude of approximately 1350 meters, at the foot of Çamlık hill, surrounded by Scots pine forests. It has cool mountain air with plenty of oxygen. Visiting Hours, Days and Entrance Fees
