History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore

  • •The lagoons, reeds and dunes that have formed in the delta where the Billaios (Filyos) River flows into the Black Sea since ancient Bithynia and Roman times host a thousand-year-old ecosystem.
  • •It is the accommodation and feeding center of more than 200 migratory bird species, including storks, pelicans, herons and birds of prey during the spring and autumn migration periods.
  • •Local legends state that the wetland, fed by the fertile alluviums brought by the Filyos River, has been a source of fishing and hunting abundance for the local people for centuries. Geographical Structure, Altitude and Natural Features
  • •Altitude is at sea level (0 - 5 metres). It extends around the Sülüklü Lake lagoon, at the mouth of the delta where the Filyos Stream meets the Black Sea.

  • •Entrance Fee:The wetland and hiking trail are completely free and open to the public.
  • •Visiting Hours and Days:It can be visited 7 days a week during daylight hours (07:00 - 19:30).
  • •Rules, Security and Baby Stroller/Disabled Access: Bird breeding and incubation areas should not be entered and silence should be maintained. Binoculars and a telephoto lens are recommended. Wooden walkways are suitable for strollers.
