History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore

  • •It is a historical monument erected in memory of Recep Kâhya, the first marine martyr of the War of Independence, and the helmsman of the Gazi Alemdar Ship, who heroically ambushed the French warships in the only naval conflict of the War of Independence on January 27, 1921, and all our martyrs.
  • •In the monument area, there is a bust of the martyr Recep Kâhya on the Black Sea Ereğli coast, ship anchors, marble inscriptions and reliefs describing the glorious victory of Turkish maritime history.
  • •In the legends, it is proudly told that the Alemdar Ship was saved from being captured by the enemy navy with the selfless support of the people of Ereğli and the fishermen, and that the ammunition shipment in the Black Sea was continued thanks to this heroism.   • •Altitude is at sea level (3 - 5 metres). It is located on the Karadeniz Ereğli coastal promenade, right next to the harbor breakwater.
  • •It is a spacious seaside park where sea breezes blow along the coastal promenade surrounded by palm, linden and plane trees.

  • •Entrance Fee:Visiting the monument park is completely free and open to the public.
  • •Visiting Hours and Days:It is open to visitors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • •Rules, Safety and Baby Stroller/Disabled Access: The coastline is completely flat and very suitable for wheelchair and stroller access.

  • •Documentary & Respectful Shooting:Martyr Recep Kâhya bust and monument base can be photographed with sea waves.
  • •Important Commemoration Days:Official military ceremonies are held on 27 January, Alemdar Ship and Martyr Recep Kâhya Commemoration Day, and 18 June, Karadeniz Ereğli's Liberation Day.
  • •Local Spiritual Tradition:On ceremonial days, wreaths are laid in the sea in memory of the martyrs and refreshments are served to the public.
