History and General Information / Local Legends and Folklore

  • •It is a monumental monument erected in memory of miner Uzun Mehmet, who changed the industrial fate of Zonguldak and Turkey by finding Turkey's first coal in the rural area of Karadeniz Ereğli Kestaneci village on November 8, 1829.
  • •The monument rises to the sky with a modern architecture symbolizing the coal seams gushing from the ground and the mine pickaxe.
  • •In the legends, it is told that Uzun Mehmet, who threw the black stones in his saddlebag into the fire and saw them burn while returning from the military, drew the attention of the Ottoman Empire to the region with this discovery and that hard coal was the lifeblood of the country.
