# Turkey's Living Atlas of Geographical Indications and Local Values: 1,600+ Registered Products, Ancient Crafts and Gastronomy Heritage
!Turkey Geographical Indications and Local Values Atlas
Anatolia is a huge agricultural and craft oasis that is unique on earth in terms of climate diversity, microclimate zones, fertile soil layers and thousands of years of civilization blend. From the thyme-scented plateaus of the Taurus Mountains to the centuries-old olive groves of the Aegean, from the fertile crescent of Mesopotamia to the misty hazelnut gardens on the steep slopes of the Black Sea, these lands; It produces not only satisfying foods, but also treasures that contain a cultural memory and a geographical identity in every bite.
The legal guarantee of this unique wealth is the Geographical Indications registration. If the reputation, quality, taste or workmanship standard of a product directly depends on the soil, water, wind of the geography where it is produced and the skill of its people passed on for centuries; that product is now registered as a global heritage. Today, we have over 1,600 registered geographically indicated products and hundreds of registration candidate values in the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT) database. Moreover, dozens of our products, from Antep Baklava to Malatya Apricot, from Milas Olive Oil to Taşköprü Garlic, have been registered with the European Union (EU) and have become registered trademarks in the world league.
Unfortunately, however, industrial imitations on supermarket shelves, fake "village" products produced with foreign-origin seeds, and underhanded productions that do not bear geographical indication emblems; It both usurps the labor of the real producer and severs the consumer's connection with real taste. My Homeland established the "Atlas of Living Geographical Indications and Local Values" by mapping Türkiye's 81 provinces and 973 districts inch by inch; It has built the digital bridge that brings together genuine masters who produce registered products, women's cooperatives and farmers directly with the public.
1. What is a Geographical Indication? Name of Origin, Country Sign and Traditional Product Distinction
Correctly understanding the concept of geographical indication is the first step towards conscious consumption. Turkish law and international standards define this protection in three main categories:
Raw material, processing and all production stages must take place in that geography with determined borders. For example: Malatya Apricot, Aydın Fig, Kars Cheddar.
It is sufficient that at least one of the production stages is carried out in that region and the product's reputation belongs to that region. For example: Antep Baklava, Adana Kebab, Maras Ice Cream.
These are products that have been produced with traditional raw materials and methods for at least 30 years, even if they are not exclusive to a certain geography. For example: Traditional Turkish Delight, Pastrami.
These registrations are not just labels; It is a legal shield that includes heavy fines and prison sentences against imitators and ensures the closure of businesses that produce counterfeit products.

The market value of geographically indicated products is 30% to 100% higher than normal products. This added value unfortunately fuels fraud and imitation in the market:
- Selling Ordinary Garlic as Taşköprü: Cheap garlic coming from China or other regions is stuffed into nets and sold in the markets with the label "Taşköprü".
- Fake Baklava with Vegetable Margarine: Products using glucose syrup, pea powder or artificial flavor under the name of Antep baklava deceive consumers.
- Marketing of Industrial Kashar as Kars Kashar: Pastry milk-free, additive-containing cheddar cheeses are wrapped in cloth sacks to make them appear local.
There must be a red (Designation of Origin) or green (Designation of Origin) official Turkish Geographical Indication emblem on the package.
When the QR code on the emblem is scanned, it should be instantly verified by which manufacturer, cooperative or business the product was produced in accordance with the registration specifications.
All geographically indicated producers in my hometown are verified with chamber of commerce registrations and local union inspection documents.

According to the Industrial Property Law, unauthorized use is considered qualified fraud and trademark infringement; Products are confiscated, heavy fines and prison sentences are imposed on businesses.
