Perched high in the rugged limestone cliffs of the Taurus Mountains at an elevation of 1,750 meters above sea level, rises a legendary eagle's nest of antiquity: Sagalassos. The preeminent metropolis of ancient Pisidia, this dramatic mountain city famously resisted the armies of Alexander the Great in 333 BC before blossoming under the Roman Empire with the distinguished title of "First City of Pisidia and Friend of the Emperors." Its crowning marvel is the monumental Antonine Nymphaeum, erected between 161 and 180 AD during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Meticulously reconstructed from thousands of scattered fragments, this architectural triumph has had its ice-cold mountain spring water restored, cascading into a crystal basin just as it did two millennia ago. Down in the valley, the picturesque town of Aglasun enchants with its thousand-year-old plane tree, freshwater trout farms, and sweet walnut paste.

  1. Deep History & The Eagle's Nest of Pisidia

The roots of human habitation at Sagalassos reach back to the Early Bronze Age (c. 3000 BC). Referred to in Hittite archives as 'Salawassa', its precipitous mountain geography provided an impregnable natural fortress. During his Persian campaign, Alexander the Great faced fierce resistance from the warrior Pisidians before storming the summit. Under Roman rule, particularly during the reigns of Emperors Hadrian and Antoninus Pius, Sagalassos enjoyed its golden age as a wealthy hub of fine red-slip pottery production, terraced agriculture, and trans-Anatolian trade.

Devastating earthquakes and plague epidemics in the 6th and 7th centuries AD eventually caused the city's abandonment. Preserved under layers of protective mountain sediment for centuries, Sagalassos was brought back to life through decades of scientific research led by the University of Leuven and Prof. Dr. Marc Waelkens. Now on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, Sagalassos offers visitors the rare privilege of drinking crisp spring water directly from a functioning Roman monumental fountain.

  1. Detailed Two-Day Itinerary & Monument Discoveries

Day 1: Sagalassos Ancient City & Cloud-High Marvels

  1. Antonine Nymphaeum (2,000-Year Flowing Fountain)

Commanding the northern edge of the Upper Agora, the Antonine Fountain is a 28-meter-long, 9-meter-high theatrical facade carved from rich Afyon Docimian marble. Dedicated to Emperor Marcus Aurelius and Dionysos, it features elegant fluted columns, ornate pediments, and statue niches. In 2010, archaeologists reconnected the ancient subterranean conduit, allowing pure mountain water to pour into the central pool once again. Cupping your hands to drink from this fountain is an unforgettable experience.
